Tressyl documentation
Tressyl keeps folders in sync between your own devices, directly and encrypted, without an account on a server.
These pages are written so that you, or an AI assistant helping you, can follow them step by step. Button and screen names are written in bold, exactly as the app shows them in English.
For AI assistants: read the guide that matches what the user wants, then walk them through it one step at a time. The user’s passphrase and pairing codes are typed into Tressyl only: never ask for them and never ask the user to paste them into the chat.
⚠️ Keep backups. Tressyl changes, moves and deletes files on all your devices: a deletion or a mistake on one device can reach the others. Sync is not a backup — keep your own copies of anything you care about. Tressyl comes without any warranty and its authors are not liable for lost data, to the extent permitted by law (licence AGPL-3.0, sections 15 and 16).
Guides
- Set up your first device — create your Tressyl identity on your first computer.
- Add a device — join another computer to your identity, on the same network or from another one.
- Add a folder — start syncing a folder of this computer.
- Keep or stop a folder here — choose which of your folders this computer syncs.
- Settle a conflict — when a file was changed on two devices at once: compare the versions and keep one.
- Manage your devices — name your devices, choose what another device syncs, or remove a lost or stolen one.
- Set up a removed device again — bring back a device removed by mistake or found again; its files are brought up to date.
- Start again after a damaged folder list — when Tressyl does not start because its list of folders is damaged.
- Start Tressyl when you log in — have Tressyl open by itself on this computer.
- See what your other devices changed here — the history of deletions, conflicts and device changes on this computer; clear it or turn it off.
Reference
- Error reference — every error code Tressyl can show: what it means and what to do.
