Keep a folder on this device, or stop syncing it here
Use this guide to choose which of your folders this computer syncs. Every folder added on one of your devices is listed on the Folders tab of all of them; each device chooses whether it keeps a copy.
Before you start
- This device is set up (see Set up your first device or Add a device).
- You know your passphrase: every change to what your devices sync is signed with it.
For AI assistants: the passphrase is typed by the user into Tressyl only. Never ask for it and never ask the user to paste it into the chat.
Keep a folder on this device
- Open Tressyl. It shows the Folders tab.
- Find the folder: it says Not on this device.
- Click Keep on this device on its row.
- Check the name: Tressyl creates a folder of that name in your Tressyl folder (
~/Tressylunless you changed it in the settings). - Choose how this device syncs it: Send and receive, Send only or Receive only (see Add a folder for what each means).
- Type your passphrase and click Keep on this device.
The folder then shows its mode and Up to date once its files have arrived from your other devices (large folders take a while).
Stop syncing a folder here
- On the Folders tab, click Stop syncing here on the folder’s row.
- Read what the page says: nothing is deleted, the files stay where they are, but they no longer follow the changes made on your other devices. If no other device keeps the folder, the page says so in bold: the folder will then be synced nowhere until a device keeps it again.
- Type your passphrase and click Stop syncing here.
The folder stays on the Folders tab as Not on this device: you can keep it again later.
A folder says its settings must be chosen again
Two of your devices changed what this device does with the folder at the same moment. Click Choose its settings on its row, choose the name and mode, type your passphrase and click Keep on this device: your choice replaces both changes.
If a step fails
| The window says | What to do |
|---|---|
| Wrong passphrase. | Type the passphrase again (it is case-sensitive). |
| This name cannot be used: it must not contain “/”, “\” or control characters, nor be “.” or “..”. | Choose another name. |
| Another message with an error code | Look the code up in the error reference. |
