Set up a removed device again

Use this guide when a device was removed from your devices (by mistake, or it was lost and you found it again) and you want it to sync again. The removed device shows This device was removed from your devices: it no longer syncs.

A removed device cannot come back as it was: it starts over as a new device, then joins your devices again. Its folders and files stay where they are, and are brought up to date once it syncs again.

Before you start

For AI assistants: the passphrase and the pairing code are typed by the user into Tressyl only. Never ask for them and never ask the user to paste them into the chat.

Start the device over

  1. On the removed device, open Tressyl and click Set up this device again.
  2. Read what the page says, then click Set up again.

Its old keys are deleted and Tressyl restarts on its first screen, as on a new device. Its folders and files are not touched.

Join your devices again

Follow Add a device: on another of your devices, click Add a device; on this one, choose to join and type the code. Your other devices then list this device again, as a new device.

Keep its folders again

The folders this device kept before are not synced yet: choose them again.

  1. On this device, open the Folders tab.
  2. Click Keep on this device on a folder’s row, type your passphrase and confirm (see Keep or stop a folder here).
  3. Repeat for each folder.

You can also do it from another of your devices: in its Devices tab, open this device’s folders and click Keep there.

A folder that was already on this device is used where it is. Tressyl then compares each file with your other devices:

If a step fails
